The traditional Omani clothes which consist of Dishdasha, Masar and Wizar have been the formal dress for the Omani man for hundreds of years It distinguishes the Omani citizen from other nationalities in the world as it is only unique for this Peaceful gulf county. As an Omani citizen you are not allowed to wear suit or casual for the passport photo. It might make the Omanis proud of themselves, but on the other hand it may cause problems for them in the western countries airports.
Unfortunately we are living in a world where people are judged by the way they look and dress rather than who they are and what they do. The moment they the airports customs see the man’s photo with the dishdasha and Masar, they get the impression that they are dealing with a very dangerous Middle Eastern terrorist. Things will have been easier if our passports and license photos are ordinary like the rest of the world.
The second point is a bit sensitive to talk about, but someone has to say something about it. It is about what is called Wizar. I personally think wizar is impractical dress and should be replaced y trousers as some gulf countries do. Despite its restriction to the man’s movement, wizar has failed so many times to act as a reliable cover to the man’s private parts. I know it may sound funny or ironic but it is damn true. The wizar become exposed if the man fall down, climb up or even sometime when setting inappropriately. Some old people exposed their wizar whiteout releasing.
This disadvantage of Wizar has been admitted formally by the government but not fully for the problem to be solved. Indians in Omans are not allowed to wear wizar when they go out of their houses and if the police catch them they will be fined. But why it is only Indians who are penalized and not everyone. Some Omani also wear wizras without dishdasha outside their houses.
To sum up, keeping our traditions is a very good thing as long as it doesn’t create further problems, contradict with our religion and put us in some embarrassing situations
