Gold Jewellery - Gold Jewellery Buying Tips

Gold is one of the most popular types of jewellery that is available to purchase. It is the number one type of metal that is used for men’s and women’s wedding rings. Gold is also used in other types of rings, as well as in earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and pendants.

Gold comes in what is called carats or karats.

Some countries call it carats while others refer to it as karats. It means the same thing and the difference is due to historical reasons and tradition. The carat of gold refers to the content of metal in the gold. The carat measures the pure gold in the jewellery.

The higher the level of gold is, or the higher the carat number, the more valuable and expensive the jewellery is. That is because the higher carats have more gold in them. The percentage of gold to other metals or alloys in carats of gold breaks down like this:

9kt gold contains 37.5% pure gold, or 375 parts per thousand
10kt gold contains 41.7% pure gold, or 417 parts per thousand
14kt gold contains 58.5% pure gold, or 585 parts per thousand
18kt gold contains 75% pure gold or 750 parts per thousand

The other percentages of the gold jewellery are made up of a combination of alloys and different metals. Some of the other metals that are added in to gold give it a different colour. Gold, in its natural and pure state is a beautiful golden yellow colour. By adding other coloured metals to the pure gold a new colour is made. Gold jewellery can also come in 10kt, 22kt, and 24kt.

Gold is a very soft substance and is easily molded and shaped into forms, rings and designs. This is one of the reasons that other alloys and metals are added in to the gold, to give them more strength and durability. The most common karat of gold used in making jewellery is 10kt, 14kt and 18kt. All three of these types of gold are strong and durable enough to make a nice piece of jewellery.

What Is Yellow Gold?

Gold comes in several different colours. This is because other metals are added to the gold to make it stronger and they lend their colour to the pure gold. Yellow gold is the most popular colour available. Yellow gold is made when the pure gold is mixed with metals like copper and zinc. These metals help the gold to remain a beautiful golden yellow colour.

Differences Between Yellow And White Gold

The first obvious difference between yellow gold and white gold is the colour of the gold. The yellow gold is more of a shiny yellow gold colour while the white gold has a lighter looking appearance similar to silver. White gold is very often mistaken for silver due to its appearance.

White gold is made using a metal called rhodium which is similar to platinum. It is a lovely white colour that helps the gold to look white. Rhodium is a very hard substance but it does wear away over time. For this reason white gold must be re-rhodium plated every 12 to 18 months to keep it looking its best.

Gold Jewellery Buying Tips

When purchasing gold there are a couple things to consider. The first factor that will want to be looked at when buying gold is the karat and the second factor is the colour.

When purchasing jewellery in North America look for the logo of the Jewellers of America. This means that the jewellery store maintains a certain level of quality in the products that they sell. When outside of North America see if there is some other affiliation or association that applies.

When looking at karats it is important to keep in mind the hardness of the gold. For example 24kt gold is very soft and typically does not make good jewellery. 18k and 14k are both very nice qualities of gold that are good and hard and more appropriate for jewellery. Remember that the lower the karat number the lower the percentage of gold is that is contained in the jewellery. This may mean that the jewellery will be harder, but it will also have a lot less gold in it.
