Oman photos

Oman's history tells stories of heroism, courage, wisdom, patriotism, love and devotion to homeland. This brings us closer to understanding the richness of the Omani cultural experience which has contributed to the building of modern Oman.
Oman’s strategic location has played a major role in many campaigns and regional conflicts in this region. Oman overlooks the Arabian Sea, the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Gulf. It also controls the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important facilities in the region, linking the Sea of Oman with the Arabian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz is a gateway to all ships coming from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.
Al Wattih in Muscat Governorate is one of the first inhabited cities. Modern archaeological discoveries suggest that humans settled in it during the Stone Age, i.e. more than 10,000 years ago.
The Babylonians and the Assyrians settled in Oman because they wanted to control the trade route that linked Asia to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
With the spread of Islam, and Mazin Bin Gadhubah joining Islam as the first person in Oman and his emigration to Medina to meet the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, the first mosque was built in Oman. This is Al Midhmar Mosque that still stands to this day in Wilayt Samail . These events paved the way for the two kings of Oman at that time, Jua’fer and Abd Ibni Al Jalandi, to enter Islam wholeheartedly and with utter conviction after receiving a letter from the Prophet, Peace be upon Him. A Hadith mentions that the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, said “God’s mercy be on the people of Al Ghubaira” (i.e. the people of Oman). “They have believed in me although they had not seen me”. Also stated in the sermon our Master Abu Bakr Al-Sidiq, the caliph of the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, to the people of Oman: “People of Oman you, you have entered Islam voluntarily although the Prophet has not come to your land on foot or on horse. You have not opposed him as other Arabs opposed him, and you have not called for separation or dispersion. May God unite you in benevolence.”
With the election of Ibn Masood, the first imam, in 751 AD, the Imamate era began in Oman and lasted four centuries until 1154. Several attempts were made to restore the rule of the Imamate in Oman in the mid-fifteenth century, but did not succeed.
During the period 1498-1507 AD, the Portuguese tried to control Oman. Omani history tells the story of the Omani people who expelled the Portuguese with their struggle and heroism. Nasser bin Murshid was elected Imam in 1624.
Because of the coastal location of Oman, the Omani navy occupied a leading position regionally. This sparked the ire of the Portuguese, who did not forget their devastating defeat. Fierce battles erupted between the Portuguese Navy (which had made India its base after the liberation of Oman) and the strong Omani navy. After a fierce battle, the Omani fleet was able to defeat the Portuguese fleet.
In 1698, the Omani Empire then expanded to include the cities of the African east coast, stretching from Mombasa to Kila, Zanzibar, Pemba and Bata. Mozambique remained under Portuguese rule until the twentieth century.
Oman had been the target of a number of attempts by the Persians to invade its territory, but the steadfastness and heroism of the Omanis were successfully combined to defeat the occupier. The invaders were defeated, underscoring the exploits of Omani heroes in defending their lands. This great victory was achieved at the hands of Imam Ahmed bin Saeed Al Busaidi, who defeated the Persians and was elected imam.
With the advent of 1970 came the dawn of a modern renaissance in the Sultanate, with the beginning of the prosperous era of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, may God protect him.

Give your loved one a ring to remember

Buying jewellery can be an exciting and confusing time. There are so many options to choose from that it can be a bit overwhelming. There are a few things that need to be discovered before making a large jewellery purchase.

The first thing that you will want to know is if you are allergic to any of the metals that are commonly found in jewellery. It would be a shame to buy a very expensive piece of jewellery only to discover that you are allergic to it. Also before you make an expensive jewellery purchase make sure that you know what you want and what you like. Buy something that you will be able to appreciate for many years to come.

Birthstones are a very popular gift giving idea and make lovely presents. When purchasing a birthstone for a loved one be sure that you know which birthstone they prefer. Several months have more than one birthstone option to choose from. Also be sure to buy jewellery that goes well with your size and frame. A large thick gold chain on a small or petite woman will look very silly. Likewise a thin gold chain would not be a good choice for a large man.

Five Great Jewellery Gifts for Her

Jewellery is the most romantic of all gifts. If romance is your end, then jewellery is the means to achieve it. The gift of jewellery speaks a thousand words: it talks about the seriousness of a relationship, the seriousness of one's intentions, and the amount of thought and passion invested in a gift selection.

When it comes to jewellery there are five gift choices: a broach, a pair of earrings, a bracelet, a necklace, and the ring.

1. The broach
A rule of thumb: jewellery items that are worn further away from the ring finger are less intimate. Jewellery worn closer to the ring finger are always more intimate, romantic and much more serious. With this in mind, a broach is the ideal first-time jewellery gift. It is a jewellery item that is classy, without being misunderstood.

2. The earrings
Women have adorned themselves with earrings for thousands of years. Even multiple ear piercings are not new; Egyptian women loved wearing numerous earrings. As a gift, earrings can be casual or formal, depending on your budget and the impression you choose to make.

3. The bracelet
Bracelets are available in two kinds: wrist bracelets and ankle bracelets. Wrist bracelets are more personal and intimate, while ankle bracelets are more casual and fun. Ankle bracelets are also deemed a sexy jewellery, so it all depends on what impression you want to make.

4. The necklace
Necklaces, by virtue of being worn close to the heart, are romantic and intimate gifts. Necklaces can be stylish and trendy or classic and traditional. They can be short or long, they can come with or without a pendant. Adding a pendant to a necklace is an extra personal touch. Pendants can also be engraved with a message.

5. The ring
Rings are the ultimate in romantic jewellery gifts and almost always symbolize a new phase in a relationship. There are rings to suit every budget, mood, and message. Rings can also be fun and casual, but they are always intimate symbols of romance.

Garnet Jewellery - Express your love

Garnet is the birthstone for people born in the month of January and it is supposed to contain powers that will facilitate your night vision and help you to achieve success. It is also the traditional stone that symbolizes the second marriage anniversary. In the past, some archeologists have found different types of garnet jewellery in the lake dweller graves. According to them, garnet was a popular form of jewellery in the Bronze Age. Today, you can find garnet mines in India, Brazil, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Siberia and Africa.

Not all the garnets are a high quality gem but the ones that are of high quality, they are more than just priceless. You buy a garnet ring once, it is for life! They are available in a broad spectrum of colours except in blue. You will find a vibrant orange garnet ring, lime green garnet ear rings, pink garnet in affordable jewellery, and even shades of violet.

Garnet consists of certain minerals like Pyralspites (aluminum), Ugrandites (calcium), Pyrope, Uvarovite, Almandine, Andradite etc. Apart from pure varieties of garnets, there are some mixed varieties like malaia or malaya, and grandite. Another type of garnet comes in a hue of purple and it is called rhodolite. As far as the colour of garnet is concerned, there is a special type of garnet called the Spessartite garnet.

Spessartite garnet is ideochromatic, which means that is gets its colour from magnesium. Magnesium produces the vibrant orange in garnets, which has become irresistible and popular. Now if you mix some iron in the form of almadine, then the garnet will produce a deeper red colour, more like the red wine and is as intoxicating. Did you know that the garnet actually got its name from the Latin word granatum meaning grain?

Garnets are available in two different forms, the igneous and the metamorphosed rock formations. These rocks are formed due to intense heat like the one produced by volcanoes. Garnets hold a strong reputation of being tough and they are used as a gemstone and also in the abrasive industry. It is an excellent substitute for mineral slag and sand in blast cleaning treatments.

One of the new found type of garnet is the Spessarite garnet. Most Spessartite garnets are available in three different categories. The light colored garnet and bright ones with deep orange or red colour comes from Nigeria. There is the spectacular tangerine orange or mandarin garnets, which come from Namibia and they are a class by themselves.

The Spessartite garnet has a deep red colour but it will look its best in incandescent light. So if you are planning to buy one then check it under the incandescent light. The garnet is quite a strong stone and measures 6.5 to 7.5 on the Moh's scale and this means that it can stand the test of time just your love. When you gift a garnet then it becomes symbolic of your love and devotion for that person.

The Perfect Wedding Ring Material - Which Metal Suits You Best

Wedding ring, a band to symbolize an endless circle of love and the commitment of marriage vows for the wedding couple is use in most marital ceremonies. To show the love and commitment that the couples have for one another, the ring is usually not taken down.

A married couple will wear their wedding ring for most of the time; this makes the wedding ring material a very important aspect to consider when choosing a suitable ring. Unless you do not have the budget to choose from a wide variety of rings with different material, it is good to have a basic understanding of the different type of material available and their pros and cons.

The most commonly use material is gold. One of the most important aspects with regards to gold is how many carats you want the ring to be. Gold is a very soft metal by itself. In its pure form known as twenty-four-carat gold, it can be bent easily and is thus not suitable for making jewelry. Therefore gold are commonly mix and hardened with copper, tin and bismuth. The concentration of alloy metals used in gold is measure in carats. The higher carats the gold is, the softer the material would be.

A general rule of thumb would be to use eighteen carat gold for wedding rings, as anything above that would be too soft, bent easily and is unsuitable for setting any precious stones. When using gold, make sure not to use too low a carat rating like nine or ten, as they tarnish and turns green or black easily. In short, eighteen carat gold is still the prefer rating nowadays that is both sturdy and of high quality. Be sure to request for it of you decided on a gold wedding ring.

Platinum, a stronger and more enduring material is getting more popular than ever. Platinum does not oxidize and can be used without worry by the person compare to gold that has higher chances of tarnish and smudges on the wearer's finger.

There is also a trace of noble characteristics attach to it. In the 18th century, platinum's rarity made King Louis XV of France declare it as the only metal fit for a king wear. It is more precious than gold and the price of platinum fluctuate with its availability on the market. Normally platinum will costs slightly less than twice the price of gold.

While most religious marital ceremonies accept a band of any material to symbolize the taking of marriage vows, it is important to get the most suitable one for yourself. After all, it is a ring of commitment that will follow you till old.

omani clothes

The traditional Omani clothes which consist of Dishdasha, Masar and Wizar have been the formal dress for the Omani man for hundreds of years It distinguishes the Omani citizen from other nationalities in the world as it is only unique for this Peaceful gulf county. As an Omani citizen you are not allowed to wear suit or casual for the passport photo. It might make the Omanis proud of themselves, but on the other hand it may cause problems for them in the western countries airports.

Unfortunately we are living in a world where people are judged by the way they look and dress rather than who they are and what they do. The moment they the airports customs see the man’s photo with the dishdasha and Masar, they get the impression that they are dealing with a very dangerous Middle Eastern terrorist. Things will have been easier if our passports and license photos are ordinary like the rest of the world.

The second point is a bit sensitive to talk about, but someone has to say something about it. It is about what is called Wizar. I personally think wizar is impractical dress and should be replaced y trousers as some gulf countries do. Despite its restriction to the man’s movement, wizar has failed so many times to act as a reliable cover to the man’s private parts. I know it may sound funny or ironic but it is damn true. The wizar become exposed if the man fall down, climb up or even sometime when setting inappropriately. Some old people exposed their wizar whiteout releasing.

This disadvantage of Wizar has been admitted formally by the government but not fully for the problem to be solved. Indians in Omans are not allowed to wear wizar when they go out of their houses and if the police catch them they will be fined. But why it is only Indians who are penalized and not everyone. Some Omani also wear wizras without dishdasha outside their houses.
To sum up, keeping our traditions is a very good thing as long as it doesn’t create further problems, contradict with our religion and put us in some embarrassing situations

omani jewellery

Silver jewellery has always been an important part of the traditional Omani attire. Necklaces, bracelets, ear rings, anklets, ear pendants, bangles and hair decorations are typical examples of this craft as well as the famous Khanjar (curved dagger), the national symbol of Oman. Nizwa is famous for the silver souq where you can find decorative jewellery and Khanjars.

Also Mutrah souq is an important souq in Oman. It is famous because it is old and it has the oldest things like silver jewelle. I hope you will visit it.
